Economist Jean Baptiste Say -- 1824 ALS to Clement Biddle, With Excellent Content. Say (1767-1832) was a French economist and businessman with classically liberal views. He argued in favor of competition, free trade, and lifting restraints on business. Autograph letter signed ("J.B. Say"), 3½ pp, 9¼ x 7½", in French, Paris, Aug. 8, 1824. M. Say thanks Biddle effusively for sending a copy of the first American edition of Say's treatise, "On Political Economy" (not present). He is grateful for the inclusion of a preliminary speech which had been omitted in M. Prinsep's translation and for the deletion of "certain notes, which serve only to prove that Mr. Prinsep has poorly understood some parts of my doctrine. Why…repeat wholesale that in searching for the foundation of the value of things, I wholly neglected what he calls 'The difficulty of attainment'? Because he does not understand that I analyze and I appreciate this difficulty under the name of expenses of production…." Much more excellent content. Written in a beautiful, clear script. Light toning, one partial fold split, else fine. With English translation. Estimate Value $500 - UP
The Michael Hecht Autograph Collection.
