Lot 477

$1.00 June 25, 1855, Central Bank of Tennessee, Nashville, TN. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. Whitman-720-001-G010a, Haxby 140-G2a, Garland-918. This piece is unremarkable, except that it bears a curious stylized overstamp on the back of a chicken or similar bird. This is the only bank for which this cataloger has seen this overstamp, which was presumably added by the bank on some of its notes to deter counterfeiters. While the host note itself is quite common, this is only the fourth example of this overprint that this cataloger has seen in more than three decades. While undoubtedly there are other survivors, it is certain that no more than a handful of examples are still in existence. The note has a hinge repaired internal tear near the left end, and some mounting remnants on the back. Estimate Value $100 - 150
From the Ora Eads Collection.

Realized $60
