1856 N-17 R2 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown. PCGS graded MS-65. Very attractive lustrous bluish steel and light olive brown with 20% of the obverse and 40% of the reverse showing original mint red. The only marks are a spot of dark toning left of the date and another smaller one at the lower right point of star 7. The reverse is nearly flawless, a couple tiny ticks on the rim at IT in UNITED from gem status. Softly struck on the coronet over LIB; otherwise nicely impressed. MDS, die state b. The fine die lines down to the right from the bottom of the hair bun are gone but the die lines over ERI are still visible. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31372. Our grade is MS64, CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety.
