Lot 269

1797 S-135 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Choice lustrous steel brown and light olive with tan faded down from mint color bleeding through in the protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a thin planchet line from the left edge of the L arcing down into the hair under LIB (as struck) and a spot of slightly darker toning at the dentil tips left of the lower end of the hair ribbon. Otherwise this piece is near gem status. MDS, Breen state III, with a small chip out of the die over the C in AMERICA. Most likely from the famous Nichols Hoard of mint state early cents. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #62008. Our grade is MS63 as well. A beautiful early large cent. The attribution and Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; finest graded of the variety at PCGS. (PCGS # 35936) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP
