Lot 1843

1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Copper, reeded edge. Judd-1525. Pollock-1691. NGC graded Proof 67 Brown. Low Rarity 7. The obverse shows the head of Liberty facing left, with a thick headband inscribed LIBERTY with tailing short ribbons behind. She is surrounded by 13 stars, with the date placed below and low, near the rim. For the reverse the complexity must be studied to be understood. The reverse is broken down into three areas, the peripheral circle which is inscribed UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and HALF DOLLAR below. Then an inner circle just inside these legends states IN GOD WE TRUST above, with E PLURIBUS UNUM below, the words separated with design elements from the inide portion. Thus we come to the center, where a large shield is placed, before which stands an eagle with open wings, clutching a long olive branch in his right claw, a trio of long arrows in his right claw. To say this reverse design is intricate would be an understatement! The design elements are a banquet for the numismatic eye. Clearly this is one of William Barber's masterpieces in numismatic art. Pop 1; The finest and only brown graded. Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

Realized $27,000
