1838 Pattern Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Restrike. Judd-84. Pollock-93. PCGS graded Proof 64. CAC. Rarity 5. Pop 9; 6 finer in 65. Well struck with nice obverse toning that is quite beautiful and antique in appearance. The reverse displays electirc blue toning that accents the eagle and letting. Very Nice in technical terms but also for the exceptional eye appeal of the toning. As more and more research is done on these important

Ongoing research by Saul Teichman, John Dannreuther and Craig Sholley has opened an intriguing door to the Gobrecht dollar patterns. Their work is published on the website www.gobrechtdollars.com. Of particular interest here, at least on the J-84, is that both Originals and Restrikes were probably struck with die alignment IV. Check the eagle's beak area for die rust, other areas are noted in the article on this pattern issue, and should clarify if this was a Restrike (circa June 1859-1863) or an Original. One notable 1838 J-84 restrike studied has the undertype of a previously 1859 Liberty Seated silver dollar which helped to pinpoint the striking of the J-84 restrikes. As more and more research and attention is focused on these fascinating patterns, collector interest and demand will remain high when a nice example like this is offered (PCGS # 11352) Estimate Value $50,000 - UP
