Lot 1469

1846. Medium date. PCGS graded Proof 63. Toned with dusky golden gray shades and antique silver on both sides. The strike is incredible, with deep defintion unheard of and unseen on business strikes of this era. Boldly reflective fields, right down to the the tiny space between the shield lines. About 10-15 known, and this Choice example lies about in the middle of the known examples in terms of quality. It would be hard to imagine a collection of these early Proof Liberty Seated half dollars, but it can be done with patience and a few decades of unceasing effort. One pops up here and there, and a serious specialist has to be ready to buy. But, what a collection it forms! Each coin a significant rarity, mintages in the 3 to 20 pieces for those dates of the 1840s, how sweet is that? Here is a coin that would make a good start at this challenging series. Pop 3; 3 in 64; 2 in 65; (PCGS # 6390) Estimate Value $15,000 - UP
