Lot 1383

1878-S. NGC graded MS-65. Pop 3; none finer at NGC. Fully white and lustrous, and boldly struck. A condition rarity at this level, with frantastic eye appeal and surface quality. This coin is as fresh as the day it was struck, with gleaming luster throughout. The recorded mintage of 140,000 pieces seems way too high given how hard this date is to find. PCGS's Coin Facts estimates only 300 examples survive in all grades, and this one is near the very top of those known. What happened to the bulk of this mintage is unknown, but this is clearly a low survival rate--and one which created another challenging coin for the numismatist to acquire. Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000
