Lot 1209

1867. Rays. NGC graded MS-66. A nice white coin which displays strong luster, a sharp strike and clean surfaces. The Rays style only lasted from the first issue in 1866 into the first few months of 1867, when the Rays were removed from subsequent dies as being too hard to strike up on the copper-nickel alloyed planchets. The nickel was so much harder than copper, that even with a scant 25% of the planchet being nickel, it required more force to strike up the designs, furthermore these harder planchets (than copper, silver or gold) tended to crack and break the dies quickly. Hence the Rays had to go, as they complicated the design. Pop 12; 3 finer; 1 in 66PL; 1 in 66; 1 in 67. Estimate Value $6,000 - 6,500
