Lot 381

1808 S-277 R2 PCGS graded AU55. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with traces of lighter golden tan in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are on the unstruck portion of the planchet. A collection of planchet chips or voids on the unstruck edge at the bottom of the reverse are the only notable marks. E-MDS, Breen state IV, with a die crack through the D in UNITED and clear die clashmarks on both sides. Struck 30% off center to K-5 leaving the date off the planchet (but the die cracks on the reverse are all you need to easily attribute the date and die variety). One of the best examples of this type of mint error on a Classic Head Cent (1808-1814) we have seen. Our grade is EF40. The attribution, 30% Off Center feature, and March Wells provenance are all noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
Ex March Wells Collection.
