Lot 29

1795 C-6b R5+ No Pole, Thick Planchet PCGS graded VG8. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth except for a couple shallow pits at ERTY in LIBERTY. No verdigris, and the only other notable mark is a fine hairline scratch in the wreath slanting through AL in HALF and the E in CENT. The details on the reverse are a couple points better than the obverse. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before the bulge right of Y in LIBERTY. The date is weak (as usual) but is complete and easily readable. Struck on a heavy planchet weighing 102.4 grains versus the 84-grain standard for the normal thin planchet strikes. There are a few curious incuse lines in the field around the top of the cap, and these may be from a spoiled large cent that was cut down to make this half cent planchet. Our grade is G6. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 7 finer for the variety. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
Ex Scotsman Auction Co. 10/16/2010-The Green Tree Collection.
