Lot 28

1795 C-6b R5+ No Pole, Thick Planchet PCGS Fine Details, Environmental Damage. Slightly glossy olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning on the devices. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye but the planchet is covered with uniform extremely fine granularity that is visible only under magnification. No verdigris, and the only contact mark is a small rim nick over the left side of the E in LIBERTY. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without the minor bulge right of the Y in LIBERTY. The date and HALF CENT are relatively weak (as usual for the thick planchet variety), but they complete and easily readable. The other legends are clear. Struck on a spoiled large cent planchet cut down to half cent diameter and weighing 116.2 grains (versus the 84-grain standard for the normal thin planchet strikes). Our grade is F12 sharpness net VG10. A decent example of the very rare thick planchet version of the die variety, at the lower end of the condition census. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Only 5 graded at Fine or better for the variety at PCGS. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
Ex Tom Reynolds 5/16/2011-The Green Tree Collection.
