Lot 25

1795 C-5b R4 No Pole, Thick Planchet PCGS graded VF30. Rather glossy medium brown with a swipe of bluish steel toning at the date and a subtle hint of reddish chocolate at the dentils off the chin. The surfaces are smooth and attractive but there are a half dozen small contact marks, including tiny nicks on the obverse rim at K-12, K-4.5, and K-7.5 suggesting this piece may have been held on a display board using tiny tacks spaced around the coin. In addition, there is a tiny scratch at the N in UNITED and another at CA in AMERICA. No corrosion or verdigris. The date is a bit weakly impressed, as always on the thick planchet version of the variety, but it is complete and easily readable. The legends are clear except for the usual weakness in the center of the reverse. Weight 115.7 grains. Struck on a planchet made from a spoiled large cent that is thicker and far heavier than the usual rolled copper planchets at the 84-grain standard intended for half cents. Our grade is VF30 sharpness net VF25. A nice example of the thick planchet version, at the lower end of the condition census. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer, 2 in 45, 1 in 50 for the variety. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
