Lot 205

1851 C-1 R1 Second 1 Repunched PCGS graded MS66 Brown. Beautiful frosty light to medium chocolate brown and olive with hints of underlying reddish steel brown faded down from mint color in protected areas on the reverse. Very sharply struck showing full radial lines in all the stars and crisp dentils around both sides. Essentially flawless. The best identifying marks, and they are microscopic, are a speck of darker toning off the end of the wreath ribbon and a tiny planchet flake at the leaf under the right foot of the M in AMERICA (as struck). EDS with smooth, hard fields on both sides and fine die lines from the dentils to the tops of NIT plus other very fine die lines at AMERICA. The base of the badly misplaced 1 is clearly visible near the dentils right of the second 1 in the date. Our grade is MS65. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; tied for finest Brown graded at both services. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
Ex Heritage Auctions 3/2/2006:71-The Green Tree Collection.

Realized $4,700
