Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 103

Lot 1860

1852 U.S. Assay Office $10 Gold, 884 THOUS. PCGS graded AU-55 SSCA 7105. Untoned with some mint luster evident. In a gold label holder as used for the coins recovered from S.S. Central America shipwreck. The central strike is sharper than often seen and some luster resides in the fields. The color is a uniform bright yellow-gold. It is interesting that a significant number of earlier Territorial gold coins were still in circulation in September of 1857, as evidenced by those recovered from this shipwreck. Most of the Territorial gold coins and bars were melted soon after the San Francisco Mint began striking coins in 1854, and a great many of the gold issues from the first few years of the Gold Rush are now quite rare today. Here is a splendid example of this popular $10 gold piece from the U.S. Assay Office struck in 1852. Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000
Ex S.S. Central America.

Realized $11,163
