Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 103

Lot 1728

1859-S. PCGS graded MS-61. CAC. Lovely golden toning with ample soft mint luster in the fields. The strike is bold throughout and the surfaces much nicer than one might expect for the modest grade. The color is a pleasing orange-gold, as usually seen on San Francisco double eagles of this era. Recall that a formidable amount of gold was found in the hills and streams of the Gold Country in California, and a lot of it went straight to the San Francisco Mint for refining and coining, then to be shipped to the east where most of these coins ended up in circulation. Of course a fair number of these coins circulated in the West as well. Pop 21; 16 finer (PCGS # 8928) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

Realized $14,100
