Swanson, Ray "Medicine Man, Navajo" (1937-2004) A member of the Cowboy Artists of America and the American Watercolor Society, Ray Swanson was known for his Southwest Native American subject--the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and Apache Indians. He proved to be one of the most popular of the genre in the late 20th century whose works hang in numerous museums and collections. He was especially known for depicting children and smaller animals belonging to these tribes and for the beauty of their traditional costumes. Though here Swanson has delivered a magnificent portrait of an elder Navajo Medicine Man, set against a vast sky with sunlight illuminating beautifully his clothing and heroic face. Quite outstanding. Painting measures 24 x 18" handsomely framed to 34 x 28" in distressed wood and antiqued silver gilt. Estimate $2,000 - 4,000
From the collection of Jackie and Gene Autry.

Realized $3,875
