Lot 1384

1907. High relief, Roman numerals, flat rim. NGC graded MS-64. The Flat Rim variety is considerably scarcer than the Wire Rim High Relief. However, these were also saved in large quantities and thus are available in most mint state grades. Finding a nice untoned example like this often requires some patience. The surfaces are elegant, with the expected strong satiny luster and fine die swirl lines scattered over the fields that are always seen on this issue. The dies were so deeply engraved that it required up to seven strikes to bring up the devices on each coin being made, so production was painfully slow. New designs in our gold coinage had not been seen in generations, so many of these were saved and well preserved. Today they stand as a testament to one mans persistence and tenacity to see his designs implemented all the while fighting terminal cancer. After a brief time, the High Relief design was reduced to a much less dramtic flat relief style which could be struck up with a single blow from the dies. Only 12,367 struck. Estimate Value $20,000 - 22,000

Realized $23,500
