1878-CC. NGC graded AU-58. Untoned and some luster evident on both sides. This is the second rarest of the prized Carson City half eagles, with a few more examples known than the 1870-CC, but both are represented by fewer than 100 coins each today. Furthermore only a couple of pieces are finer than the present offering. To find a wholesome AU-58 of this date requires considerable patience and usually quite a bit of luck, but here is an opportunity for the astute numismatist to sock away this classic rarity.
