Lot 1181

1857-D. PCGS graded AU-58. This is the lowest mintage Dahlonega Mint half eagle struck since that Mint opened. Later issues through 1861-D continue to show fewer coins struck as the presures built on this Mint with the onset of the Civil War looming. For the collector, a high grade 1857-D helps define an advanced Dahlonega collection, so a coin like this should be strongly pursued. Today most of the known examples are well worn, and tremendous collector demand is noted when a choice, high grade 1857-D crosses the auction block. This particular coin offers substantial luster in the fields, a sharper than typical strike and clean surfaces. These factors combine to keep the eye appeal high. An exceptional coin for the astute numismtist. Identifiable by a short, shallow scratch in the lower right obverse between the last two stars. Mostly untoned. Only 17,046 struck. Pop 11; 9 finer, 4 in 61, 4 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 8273) Estimate Value $4,500 - 5,000

Realized $6,169
