Lot 513

1884 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 65. Bright white and untoned, this one is curious. It appears that the Mint used a bit to much "frosting" on the dies, as Liberty is a bit moth eaten in appearance. This was caused by the Mint using a mild acid to eat into the dies (which creates the roughness and hence the "frosted" devices) then the die is polished on a flat polishing machine, so only the fields are brought back to perfect as glass smoothness. On this particular coin, the devices are a bit too frosted, and some of the definition is lost, as made at the Mint. Well struck and preserved.
Estimated Value $850 - 950.

Realized $1,035
