Lot 495

1828 Capped Bust Dime. Small date. . R-1. PCGS graded MS-65. This coin is most likely a proof, but the graders at PCGS apparently did not agree. Note the full and complete frost on all the devices, especially on Liberty and within the eagle's wings. As to the strike, it is razor sharp throughout, each radial line on every star is bold, and the mirror surfaces within the shield lines on the reverse. Obviously, this is a special coin, and anyone examining it will have to develop their own opinion, but this is clearly not a normal, run of the mill business strike.
Proofs are known from this die pairing, and to find one of the few examples known in such pristine condition, obviously an early strike, would be too much of coincidence. PCGS has only graded 1 coin as a proof, and in mint state just 4 this high and a single coin graded higher. Untoned and with just a couple of faint handling marks. Stuck from clashed dies, as are most of this issue. A foremost rarity in this grade (whether proof or mint state) and one of the finest in existence.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
