1854 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 65. Deep gray in color with hints of gold at the center, with the toning very deep and rich in color. Reflective fields and boldly impressed by the dies. Apparently this is obverse die 2, per Breen as there are die file marks above TED of UNITED. These were struck on May 22, 1854 to commemorate the change in the design of adding two additional outlines to the star. As a Proof, PCGS estimates 30 were struck, Breen says 20 survive. A total of 17 have been graded by PCGS and NGC combined, and of those, NGC has graded 3 this high with none higher, and PCGS has none as PR-65, and a single coin graded PR-66 above. Hence, this is certainly in the top 4 known, and one of the few gems available of this date. It is also the first year of issue of the redesigned obverse, and important as such to type collectors. This particular coin is tied with the coin from the Garrett Sale and the Pittman Sale, both of which are graded by NGC as PF-65. A gem example of this truly rare coin, and worthy of the finest collection.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
