Lot 416

Seated Liberty Dollar. 1851. PCGS graded Proof 64. Restrike. Centered date. One of approximately 15 known, this clearly one of the very best in existance. PCGS has only graded 4 coins this high, with none graded higher. In the toning department, this coin has little to cover over any problems, it's virtually untoned aside from a delicate whisper of color around the extreme periphery. Frosted devices float off the mirror fields. Trivial hairlines reside atop the fields, but we have far fewer here than normally encountered. Identifiable by a short lint mark on the first star and a barely visible spot in the field below F A of OF AMERICA. We are proud to offer one of the classic rarities of the Seated Dollar series, long recognized as such. These restrikes were created sometime after 1851 once early collectors found that no original 1851 Dollars were available, certain "friends" in the Philadelphia Mint set up another obverse die, this one with the date centered instead of very high as on the originals, and ran off a few more to meet demand, no doubt at a small profit. An important rarity in the finest available grade!
