Lot 346

Half Dollar. 1852-O. PCI graded Proof 50, damaged rim. An extremely rare coin that should be examined by specialists. Thought to be one of only 3 struck in Proof from this important branch Mint. Originally, this coin resided in the Norweb collection, where it was sold by Bowers and Merena in 1987 as lot 3158 (auction lot insert included) and the Norweb pedigree is noted on the holder. The coin never circulated, but has been mishandled to some minor extent, as the PCI holder notes that there is a "damaged rim". Examination fails to note anything irregular, perhaps the wire rim (if any) was filed off. Nevertheless, the fields have full reflective mirroring, but show myriad marks from handling and cleaning (as do all known, by the way).

Thought to be one of only 3 traced by Breen, this one shows Liberty's foot not supported, with faint die file marks between UNIT and the wing. An important and decidedly rare coin that any specialist will appreciate. Downgraded because of the hidden damage on the rim, but not for actual circulation as there is no wear on Liberty or on the eagle.

Realized $1,210
