Lot 247

Hardy, Sir Thomas Masterman, 1st Baronet (1769-1839) Officer of the Royal Navy taking part in some of the most historic naval battles in British history. He served as flag captain to Admiral Lord Nelson, and commanded HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars. Nelson was shot as he paced the decks with Hardy, and as he lay dying, Nelson's famous remark of "Kiss me, Hardy" was directed at him. In Hardy's honor The Hardy Monument, a 72-foot high tower, was erected on Dorset's Black Down hill in 1844 by public subscription. Offered is a scarce autographed letter signed while at the Greenwich Hospital in May, 1939 and died the following September. This is professionally presented with laser copy of the front of letter so the verso could be exhibited with Hardy's signature. Also included is an engraving of Hardy and an image of Nelson for a complete bit of British Naval History in a nice presentation. Measures 16 x 26". Estimate Value $200 - 400

Realized $238
