Manuscript document signed "Turenne" as Marshal of France and Lieutenant General of the King's Army in Germany, one page, laid paper, 8¼ x 6½", Creutzen[ark?], Dec. 29, 1644. During the Thirty Years War, Turenne orders the Viscount of Courval to take the two soldiers who left Rüsselsheim without permission and turn them over to St. Colben. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne (1611-1675) was often called simply Turenne. He was from a prominent French Huguenot family (he later converted to Catholicism) and his mother was Dutch (her father was William of Orange). He achieved military fame, becoming one of six Marshals of France who were made Marshal General of France. After Turenne's death in battle in 1675, he was given a grand funeral and buried outside of Paris, at the Abbey of St. Denis. In 1802, Napoleon, who was an admirer and wrote about Turenne's military exploits, had his remains re-interred inside Paris's Eglise des Invalides, where Napoleon would later be interred himself. Estimate Value $300 - 500
