Tito, Josip Broz - Signed Photo of the Yugoslav Strongman (1892-1980). Yugoslav revolutionary and statesman who dominated Yugoslav politics for over four decades. During World War II, he led the Yugoslav resistance, the Partisans (1941-45). He was Prime Minister (1944-63), President (later President for Life) (1953-80) of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). From 1943 to his death in 1980, he held the rank of Marshal of Yugoslavia, serving as the supreme commander of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). He was known as a "benevolent dictator" who held Yugoslvia together. After his death, nationalist aspirations took over and resulted in five years of warfare and the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
