First Ladies, Nine Signed Pieces. 1. Frances Cleveland (1864-1947). Free Frank ("Frances Cleveland Preston"), in dark blue ink, on a "Westland / Princeton, New Jersey" embossed envelope, Princeton, New Jersey, May 6, 1934. Here, former First lady Cleveland continues to use her presidential widow's free frank, despite her remarriage to Professor Thomas Preston of Princeton University and the fact that 26 years have passed since President Cleveland's passing. Fine.
2. Edith Roosevelt (1861-1948). Autograph Letter Signed ("Edith Roosevelt"), in black ink, on "Sagamore Hill" stationery, 3 pages, recto & verso, 4¾ x 3¾", "Oyster Bay", Long Island, New York, June 30, 1942. To Mr. Harry Kirkover of Camden, South Carolina. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope, to which Mrs. Roosevelt has lent her Free Frank ("Edith K. Roosevelt"), in black ink, Cold Spring Harbor, July 1, 1942. Both pieces are fine.
3. Grace Coolidge (1879-1957). Free Frank ("Grace Coolidge"), in black ink, on her personalized address stationery envelope, Northampton, Massachusetts, September 19, 1946. Also, First Day Cover, a tribute to the late President Coolidge, signed ("Grace Coolidge"), in black ink, Northampton, Massachusetts, May 30, 1933. Both fine.
4. Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962). Typed letter signed ("Eleanor Roosevelt"), in black ink, on "St. Francis Hotel" stationery, 1 page, 6 x 9½", San Francisco, California, February 17, 1958. Small stains from a rusted staple and paper clip, along with a few drops of oil, appear in the upper left corner, but the text and signature are clean and bold. In very good condition.
5. Bess Truman (1885-1982). First Day Cover, a memorial for the late President Truman, signed ("Bess Truman"), in black ink, Independence, Missouri, May 8, 1973. The signature is perfect, but the vignette has been removed from the cover.
6. Mamie Eisenhower (1896-1979). First Day Cover, featuring Dwight D. Eisenhower as the 34th President of the U.S., signed ("Mamie Doud Eisenhower"), in black ink, Washington, D.C., August 6, 1970. Fine.
7. Lady Bird Johnson (1912-2007). First Day Cover, featuring the late LBJ as the 36th President of the United States, signed ("Lady Bird Johnson") in black ink, Austin, Texas, August 27, 1973. Accompanied by a second First Day Cover, likewise featuring the late President Johnson, signed ("Lady Bird Johnson"), in black ink, Austin, Texas, August 27, 1973. Both fine.
8. Pat Nixon (1912-1993). Signature ("Patricia Ryan Nixon") with short inscription ("With best wishes,"), on a 4¾ x 3" card, n.p., n.d. Fine. Estimate Value $400 - 600
