Sale 98

Lot 453

1797 S-122 R5+ G5. Sharpness EF40 but covered with fine to moderate porosity and granularity. Slightly glossy dark olive brown mixed with lighter green verdigris, strongest on the reverse. This cent has the look of a nearly new copper than was lost in soil for a while, but the seller says it was stored in an attic for the last 60 years. Both may be true. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack through the top of MERI. The date and legends are all strong. There is a minor planchet clip affecting the dentils at K-8 on the obverse and the opposing A in STATES (as struck). A new discovery. Far from perfect but probably the sharpest example known of this very rare variety. Estimate Value $400 - UP

Realized $353
