1856 N-3 R1 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Glossy bluish steel brown with 20-25% of the slightly faded mint red remaining. The only defect is a small spot of darker steel and olive toning (not carbon) in the field left of the bottom of star 8. M-LDS, die state e, with a die crack through TATES to the dentils over OF in addition to the earlier cracks on the obverse. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#3 behind two slightly finer examples in the Grellman census. This cent is plated on the back-right page in the second (1987) edition of the Grellman book on late date cents. The attribution and Holmes-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 66 for the variety. PCGS #406201. Estimate Value $800 - UP
