Lot 679

1798 S-181 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8 F12. Variety with a stray 8 hidden in the drapery and large 0's over small 0's in the denominator. A few points sharper but there are shallow contact marks scattered over both sides, including light scratches on the obverse, mostly in the field before the portrait. All the marks are covered by attractive glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and olive toning and the eye appeal of this cent is nice for the grade. LDS, Breen state IV. There are clear die cracks on the obverse and a slightly raised retained cud break affects the bust tip. The bottom of the stray 8 is clearly visible in the drapery folds over the right edge of the normal 8, and the large 0's over small 0's feature in the denominator is obvious on the second 0. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the reverse is rotated 40 degrees CCW. Comes with a nice provenance. Estimate Value $300 - UP
Ex Jack Robinson, Superior 1/29/1989:375 (lot ticket included).
