Lot 236

1794 S-17a R5- Head and Edge of 1793 F12. Sharpness EF40 with scattered pits, mostly on the top of the obverse, and traces of hard verdigris on both sides. Del Bland calls these "severe planchet defects," and some of the flaws appear to be exactly that, but certainly not all. In addition there are a few light scratches at the top of the date, some more along the upper edge of the pole, and a couple stronger ones at the right top of the Y in LIBERTY. Fortunately most of the planchet is reasonably smooth and the toning is a very attractive slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The date and legends are complete and strong. LDS, Breen state IV, with an obvious die crack that bisects the obverse. This crack is visible all the way across the obverse including the highest points of the hair. This is the only example known to us that shows the complete crack, and it is the Breen plate coin for the die state in his encyclopedia on early date large cents. Graded EF45 with "severe planchet flaws" by Del Bland and listed as CC#2 behind the ANS example in the Bland/Breen census. Noyes says EF40 net VG10, his photo #31639. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP
