Lot 2038

Vespasian. Gold Aureus (7.17 g), AD 69-79. Lugdunum, AD 71. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG TR P, laureate head of Vespasian right. Reverse: COS III FORT RED, Fortuna standing left, holding globe and caduceus. RIC 1111; BN 292; BMC 382; Calicó 613. A pleasing example with a few faint hairline scratches in the right obverse field. Very Fine. Estimate Value $3,500 - 4,000
Although the reverse type does not explicitly refer to the Flavian victory in the Jewish War, it was struck in the year in which Titus returned to Rome after the fall of Jerusalem and celebrated a lavish triumph. The reverse, which refers to the "return of (Good) Fortune" obliquely alludes to the return of Titus at the successful conclusion of the main campaign against the Jewish rebels.

Realized $5,640
