In 1664, the Grandvizier Köprülü forced Montecuccoli to fight near St Gotthard at the Austrian frontier. The battle was won chiefly through attacks by 6,000 French troops led by La Feuillade and Coligny and the German troops led by Waldeck. Montecuccoli failed to exploit the victorch troops led by La Feuillade and Coligny and the German troops led by Waldeck. Montecuccoli failed to exploit the victory.
