Lot 1628

Constantine III. Silver Siliqua (1.54 g), AD 407-411 Superb EF. Treveri. D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine III right. Reverse: VICTORI-A AAVGGG, Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and inverted spear; TRMS. RIC 1534; RSC 4A. A splendid example with gorgeous iridescent toning. A magnficent example of this rare issue. Superb Extremely Fine.
There are two distinct varieties of the cuirass upon which Victory is seated on the siliquae of Constantine III. The first is stylized to the point of being essentially schematic, and is even referred to as a throne by King in RSC. The second variety depicts the cuirass fairly well, such as on the present coin, and is by far the rarer of the two. RIC further differentiates these siliquae by whether or not a throne back is visible behind Roma. All of the examples illustrated in RIC, however, regardless of how they are described in the text, depict the cuirass as stylized. On our coin, there is no throne visible at all. Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000

Ex Münzhandlung Beckenbauer stock, 1982.
