Lot 1288

Cameos, Pair, Continental Stone. Circa mid-19th century. The first, certainly of Italian origin, is carved in "lava stone" indigenous to southern Italy. This bust crafted in a handsome classical style depicts Diana, goddess of the hunt. Her shoulders are viewed from the back with her head in profile to the left. Bordered in a contemporary gold frame with filigree border. The second piece is similar in a violet-tinged, reddish marble likely from central Italy portraying a classically-inspired woman's profile. She wears a beaded necklace and her elaborate coiffure of corkscrew curls is bound with a ribbon. In a gilded bronze frame, similar to the previous cameo. The former stone with some wear, the latter, in choice condition. Both with antique repairs to the metal frames. Measuring 42 mm. and 40 mm. An appealing lot of the type of artistic souvenirs produced for tourists making the "Grand Tour" of Italy's classical sites.
Estimated Value $175 - 275.
