Lot 4272

Great Britain. Crown, 1845. S.3882; ESC-282; EMC-1409; Davies-433; Dav-105; KM-741. Victoria. By William Wyon. Young head left, W.WYON R.A. raised on truncation, date below, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA around portrait. Reverse, inverted die axis, crowned and garnished shield, emblems below: BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: incuse inverted edge lettering, cinquefoil stops on edge. Beautifully toned mint state, obverse and reverse having a light pastel blue and gold color over original luster. Fewer surface marks than usually encountered on these large silver coins. Seldom have I seen such an eye catching example of a 'Young Head' crown. PCGS graded MS-62.

* Usually, these coins are encountered in Fine to Extremely Fine grade, they circulated extensively and it seems that few were retained in the highest grades for today's collectors. 'English Silver Coinage' by Alan Rayner states (footnote p.37) 'Young head crowns are common in worn to average condition (Fine and below) but are very difficult to obtain in XF' Rayner speculates: The rarity of an uncirculated specimen would probably be Rarity 3'.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Realized $4,700
