Lot 1600

1880-S. PCGS graded MS-68. Back in the 1970s and early 1980s, this would have been called a Wonder Coin when viewed at a coin show. Now, it seems like the sometimes overused words, Superb Gem really don't quite describe the true beauty of this example. The obverse is reflective with a deeply frosted portrait indicating it was struck with a freshly prepared die. The reverse, on the other hand, was struck with a more used die leaving it with a satiny field and barely frosted device. Both sides exhibit a scant amount of reddish-golden peripheral toning. An absolutely remarkable specimen destined for the finest collection. Pop 192; 13 finer, 8 in 68+, 5 in 69. (PCGS # 7118) .
Estimated Value $3,300 - 3,500.

Realized $4,583
