1858. Large Letters. PCGS graded Proof 65 PQ. CAC Approved. As long as we can remember, proof 1857 and 1858 Flying Eagle cents have been overshadowed by the popularity of the well known 1856, but years of certification has clarified the true rarity -- particularly in Gem Proof -- of these popular coins. This remarkable Gem example exhibits razor-sharp striking definition and lovely multicolored iridescence, along with clean, virtually flawless surfaces. Various hues of mint-green, sunset-red, old-gold, and others combine to decorate the nicely reflective underlying fields. Close examine with a loupe reveals mint-made diagonal file marks beneath the first 8 and 5 in the date, and faint doubling on UNI. These are consistent with the diagnostics for a proof example of this date and type. Snow characterizes this variety as "very rare", estimating that perhaps 100 pieces were originally produced, for approximately 80 minor proof sets and 20 pattern sets. A seldom offered issue and a true opportunity for the small cent specialist. Pop 17; 1 finer in 65+. (PCGS # 2042) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 27,000.

Realized $25,850
