[Washington, George] Hand Engraved Portrait on Ivory, C. Early 1800s. An extremely well-accomplished hand engraved or scrimshawed portrait of George Washington on a thin piece of ivory, backed with card stock and mounted into a period brass frame, 1.5" x 2" oval., maker unknown. The portrait consists of a series of vertical lines, arranged next to each other, so as to give the impression of significant depth and high detail. The ivory shows some natural lamination cracks at the bottom away from the portrait and another hairline from the extreme left edge to the front of Washington's chin. The workmanship is excellent. This very piece is plated and identified as Baker Y-7A in the 1999 revision of Rulau/Fuld's Medallic Portraits of Washington 2nd Edition, where it is listed as the only example known to the authors. Very fine condition.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,500.
From the collection of Dean William Rudoy.
