[Lincoln, Abraham] Photograph by Alexander Hesler. Taken June 3, 1860, in Springfield, Illinois, as Lincoln campaigned against Stephen A. Douglas, the Republican presidential nominee. 5¼ x 4 1/8" (visible); matted and framed to 12½ x 10½". The purchase of this negative from Hesler by George A. Ayres in 1867 saved it from being burned when Hesler's studio was destroyed in the Chicago fire of 1871. The plate was cracked in the mail, resulting in a hairline crack across Lincoln's chest. (M-26, O-16).
Estimated Value $300 - 500.

Realized $191
