[Grant, Ulysses S.] Mammoth Albumen Photograph by Gutekunst, 1866. Stunning albumen three-quarter length photo of Lieutenant-General Ulysses S. Grant in uniform, wearing a black mourning ribbon for President Lincoln above his left elbow. Grant's right hand is in his pocket and his left hand is tucked in his waistcoat. The photo measures 17¾ x 15¼" on a 18¾ x 15¼" mount with the imprint of photographer F. Gutekunst of Philadelphia. A 25¢ revenue stamp is on the verso, as well as Gutekunst's information, including the notice that the negative to this print will be preserved for one year from June 1866. Photo has toning in an oval shape, reflecting an earlier framing, as does some white archival tape on verso edges; pin holes at corners and below Grant's name, affecting "E-N" in "GENERAL"; small numerous specks in lower part of image, made less noticeable by the darkness of Grant's trousers. Blemishes are minor in upper portion of image. This is a superb image of Grant, who looks as if he is about to speak.

During the Civil War, Congress passed a law to collect taxes to aid in funding the Union war effort. From August 1, 1864 through August 1, 1866, duties were collected on photographic images; hence, any photo with a stamp on the verso can be placed as having been taken within that time frame.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 2,000.
