Syro-Hittite. Bird-headed Astarte Figurine, ca. 3rd Millennium BC. A light brown clay fertility idol with the face of a bird, pointed nose and very large eyes, wearing a crown and two necklaces; arms are outstretched and body is a long simple column. Mounted in a clear case with removable top. We note some damage to the bottom right side and the head has been reattached. Height: 8"; Width: 3 inches. Dimensions of case- Height: 10"; Length: 5"; Width: 5".

Astarte was a female deity from the Mesopotamian area which spread to many other cultures in the Mediterranean. Astarte was associated with fertility, sexuality, war. These attributes have stark comparisons with the female deities: Ishtar, Aphrodite, Venus, and the Etruscan Uni-Astre (Juno).
