Orbis Terrarum Nova et Accuratissima Tabula. Autore Iohanne à Loon, [Amsterdam, 1680] 2nd edition. 17¾ x 21"; matted and framed to 30". Double hemispherical map of the world based largely on Visscher's world map of 1658. With California as an island. Shows Tasman's discoveries in 1642-43 and 1644. Decorative cartouche with English coat of arms reads: "Serenissimo Potentissimoque / Domino, Domino / Carolo Secondo / Magnae Britanniae, Franciae, et Hiberniae Regi, Defensori Fidei. Hano tabulam totius Orbis. D.D.D." Hemispheres are surrounded by colored illustrations of Zeus, Poseidon, Persephone and Demeter. Overall age browning and staining; moderate damage from insects, primarily to borders; foxing to mat. Not examined out of frame.

Van Loon (c. 1649-86) was a mathematician and engraver who contributed charts and maps to various pilot books and sea atlases by Jacobsz, Jan Jansson, Johannes J anssonius van Waesbergen and Robijn. In 1661he published a sea atlas which was popular until the end of the century.
