Flown Mercury "Sigma 7" Aft Heat Shield Section. Flown Mercury "Sigma 7" Aft Heat Shield Section. MA-8 piloted by Wally Schirra was the fifth mercury flight launched October 3, 1952. Sigma 7 completed 6 orbits in 9 hours, 13 minutes The longest Mercury flight to date. Built of honeycombed aluminum with many layers of glass-fiber material, the heat shield would boil away as the Mercury capsule descended through the atmosphere. As the silica material (fiberglass) melted, it deposited a white residue on its surface, resembling icing. Section measures approximately 1½ x 1". Comes with consignor’s COA.
