Lot 127

1794 S-22 R1 Off Center AG3. A couple points sharper but minor roughness covers the fields and protected areas on both sides while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris. Medium brown and light chocolate fading to darker chocolate brown in protected areas. The highpoints are glossy and the date remains readable (although it is weak). Struck 5-10% off center to K-3. The only significant mark is a strong punch on the unstruck portion of the planchet over the D in UNITED. This indent may have been caused by the collar post of the coining press and not be post-minting damage. It looks quite similar to the collar post indent example of a 1793 C-2 half cent that was in the Davy Collection (our sale 9/19/2010:2). A short post was used to hold the coining collar in place in the press. It appears this planchet just happened to be positioned off center in the direction of that post, and the planchet was pressed against the post when it was struck by the dies. A really neat mint error, possibly unique for a large cent with the collar post indent. Estimated Value $1,000-UP

Realized $1,840
