Lot 248

1795 S-80 R5+ Jefferson Head With Plain Edge PCGS Graded F15. Rather glossy dark olive brown with lighter chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. Microscopic granularity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides but the overall appearance of this piece is rather nice for the grade, especially on the obverse. There are a few very old contact marks on both sides, including a small chip out of the rim right of the date and a dull scratch hidden in the patina under the date. The detals are well balanced on this piece with a clear date and nearly complete legends on the reverse, only the tops of TES-OF starting to fade into the rim above. Quite often these Jefferson Head Cents are much weaker on the reverse than the obverse details would suggest. A nice example of the popular Jefferson Head variety. Not perfect, but we have never seen one that was even close to that standard. All 5 of the Jefferson Head varieties in the landmark Dan Holmes sale (our sale 9/6/2009, lots 129-133) had significant defects. Our grade is F12. And it comes with a nice provenance.
Estimated Value $50,000-UP.
