1834 $5 Classic Head. Plain 4. NGC graded AU-55. Natural russet toning rests within the devices. Several minor varieties this first year, Classic Head pieces are found with a plain 4 in the date or a crosslet 4. With the new Coinage Act of 1834, earlier old tenor gold coins were withdrawn, melted, and recoined into the new William Kneass design half eagles and quarter eagles, replacing the now outdated older pieces (PCGS # 8171) .
