Lot 475

1834 N-3 R7 (as a proof). NGC graded Proof 65 Brown. Variety with a Large 8, Small Stars, and Medium Letters. Beautiful gunmetal bluish steel and olive. Very sharply struck with needle-sharp details and deeply mirrored fields on both sides. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a tiny planchet flake on the cheek right of the nostril (as struck), a pair of faint spots of slightly darker toning on the jawline, and a microscopic struck-through line left of the date (caused by a tiny piece of lint on the die). There are some barely visible hairlines in the fields, mostly around ONE CENT; otherwise this cent is a gem in every respect. Our grade is Proof-64. Certainly one of the finest known examples of this very rare proof large cent, and it comes with an important provenance.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
Ex R. Green 7/1952-John J. Pittman, David Akers Numismatics 10/21/1997:222.
